Star of TV's The World's Greatest Musical Prodigies comes to Leeds
The Ninth Leeds Conductors Competition will commence on 30 June at Leeds Town Hall, with sixteen competitors taking to the stage to compete for £12,000 in prize money and a string
of engagements with the country's finest orchestras. One particularly high profile contestant is sixteen year old Alexander Prior, who is currently featured in the Channel 4 series,
The World's Greatest Musical Prodigies. The series follows Alexander as he searches for the world's greatest young musical talent to perform his new concerto.
Whilst all competitors must be under 35, Alexander is the only child taking part yet he has just finished his third year at the St Petersburg Conservatory. He is also a prolific
composer with more than 40 works to his name. Alexander made his UK conducting debut with The National Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican in 2007 and in Russia he has appeared with o
rchestras including The State Symphony Orchestra of St Petersburg and the New Opera Moscow (conducting his own ballet Mowgli).
Alexander was selected as one of sixteen competitors from over 50 applications from all over the world. Following two preliminary rounds, the jury will face the difficult task of
selecting three finalists to conduct the Orchestra of Opera North in Leeds Town Hall on 4 July. This Gala Final Concert will see entrants conduct works by Sibelius, Elgar and Beethoven
and the audience will vote for the winner of the Audience Prize. Tickets are priced from £9.50 (concessions available) and are available from the Box Office on 0113 224 3801.
Admission to the first and second rounds of the competition is free.
