Introduction
Great conducting in all its variety remains a mystery. It is an art that goes beyond technique, and can be no more explained in precise terms than the light of a Rembrandt painting. Notwithstanding the quality of the musician, it is the impact that the conductor has on the sound of an Orchestra, their artistry, interpretation and sheer charisma which creates those magical, spine tingling moments. Instinctively, we know when we are in the presence of great conducting.
The search for the next generation of conductors is one of the most important tasks facing the musical world. As orchestras continue to evolve, conductors, composers and, most importantly, their colleagues in our orchestras have a great responsibility to engage the public in vibrant and committed music making.
The Leeds Conductors' Competition remains Britain's longest running and most distinguished competition. It retains a vital role in providing an important platform for young conductors, and offering the winner the opportunity to establish a conducting career through immensely prestigious engagements with the country's leading orchestras.
Previous winners have distinguished themselves throughout the world.
My colleagues and I on the panel of the Leeds Conductors' Competition look forward to you joining us for what I am confident will be a fascinating and memorable occasion as we endeavour to recognise the extraordinary talent of the future.
